School Programs


Children spend a significant portion of their day in the school environment. For this reason, school staff members are often placed in primary support roles with students grieving the loss of a loved one. Cornerstone of Hope seeks to come alongside schools, providing grief support and education services for staff, students, and families.


Cornerstone of Hope Provides:

  • Initial Phone Consultation to determine appropriate needs and resources
  • Free Grief Education Materials for staff, students, and families
  • Grief Support Groups for students
  • Initial Debriefing with Staff after a loss
  • Information on current and upcoming Grief Services and Events for students and families taking place at Cornerstone of Hope



Arts based therapy support group designed to help children and adolescents who have experienced the death of a loved one. Groups last eight weeks for approximately 60 minutes. Groups are designed for 4-8 children or teens and are offered for grades 1 through 12. Groups will be determined by age and developmental appropriateness. Groups are based on staff availability.


Social emotional learning competencies addressed:

  • Increase self-awareness of one’s own grief reactions
  • Explore how grief affects the whole person
  • Educate about common emotional, mental, physical, spiritual and behavioral grief reactions
  • Provide a healthy and age appropriate outlet for strong emotions
  • Provide positive coping skills for participants to manage their emotions and behaviors to achieve their goals
  • Provide memorial art therapy interventions
  • Provide a supportive environment amongst student peers, increasing student’s sense of support within the school community



Cornerstone of Hope contracts with schools to provide in-service training for school professionals. A licensed professional from Cornerstone will provide training in any of the following formats:

  • Customized Staff Grief Training
  • Crisis Training for Districts or Individual Schools
  • Customized Student Education Programs
  • Customized Parent Education Programs



Cornerstone of Hope contracts with schools to provide on-site and phone consultation for school personal. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Best practices for communication with students and families
  • Best practices for supporting school staff following a loss
  • Best practices for supporting students and families following a loss
  • Best practices for memorial and remembrance activities
  • On-going phone consultation with administrative and counseling staff working with grieving students and families
